Elden Ring: New Definiton to Souls-like Games

Elden Ring is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and made in collaboration with fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin, who provided material for the game’s setting. It was released on February 25, 2022, and has been very popular since.

This game takes you through many emotions. Anger as you spend hours trying to kill the bosses, exhilaration when you finally overcome them, but most importantly, fascination as you get to explore this beautiful open world and it’s encounters. Elden Ring sets a new standard, and already has everyone excited for the future of Souls games.

Elden Ring offers you a breathtaking universe that is difficult to leave. The pleasure of exploration of this game always feels rewarding. What makes this experience so different is that Elden Ring does not have a quest log. It also does not have an icon-studded mini-map, or on-screen overlays and an arrow pointing you to what to do next in your adventure. The game is designed to offer the players many options, and to encourage you to see more of the world. This is an experience that does not just want you to be stuck at a boss for days, not being able to progress and see more of the world.

That being said, Elden Ring is also one of the most difficult yet rewarding Souls-like game so far. The first few hours of this experience may feel more gentle, but it does not take much time for you to be reminded of FromSoftware’s traditional brutality. When it comes to combat, it is what you would expect from a game that is meant to be difficult, but with more depth added to it. The classes feel balanced the more you progress into the game no matter which one you pick. It also does not force you to loot a weapon the boss dropped, and try getting better at using it. Instead, you find a weapon that you are comfortable using in the game, and upgrade it to use it until later in the game.

Another additon that can be used in combat that makes Elden Ring interesting is the new transportation, with a steed called Torrent. With this, you are able to engage enemies in the open world on horseback, or with your choice of ranged weapons.

However, there is another way to approach combat in this game, and it is undeniable that this style of engaging can make things easier for you. With the option of Stealth, you are able to hide around and avoid enemies, as well as try getting to a position to have an advantage before starting the combat. Especially with a build relying on the advantages of stealthing, hiding around and clearing enemies one by one is not something that was done before in Souls games, pushing beyond the classic systems.

Even after hours of gameplay, Elden Ring will always offer you things you missed in the story and around the world. There will still be bosses left undiscovered for you to come back to, side quests you did not notice in your first playthrough, different weapons, skills and magic you never used that you will surprise you.

This mixture of a captivating story, combat style and exploration makes Elden Ring a masterpiece, and undoubtfully a beginning of a new period for Souls-like games. After you arrive in the fields of Limgrave, you get freedom to make this beautiful realm your own. You will meet uniquely designed NPC’s, from merchants to warriors, and maidens with all their own stories to tell you, which will intertwine with each other’s stories, and yours too. Elden Ring is a game filled with things that will want you to keep exploring it’s world, so make sure to give it a chance no matter what style of gaming you enjoy in Souls-like games.
