As we covered in our previous post, the new generation of Pokémon will be with us in late 2022 as Scarlet and Violet! While Nintendo has been scarce on information since the initial announcement, that hasn’t stopped many rumours and speculation circulating around the fanbase — especially with possibilities for new Pokémon and their regional variants!

Regional variants were first added in Generation Seven, with Pokémon Sun and Moon — these were immediately popular with the fans with the adorable Alolan Vulpix capturing many players hearts.

Firstly, we have been treated to possible leaks for variants of Diglett and Oddish. This is very much in line with the majority of other regional variant, and these were ways to increase type variety within the original 151 Pokémon from Gen 1. The water and ground typing has been a very strong dual typing since its introduction in Generation 2, and I look forward to seeing how this works out for Diglett! We have no clear indication of the new Oddish’s typing , and perhaps it will also become a water type in exchange for its former poison typing, in line with its new beachside home.

We have also seen leaks for possible evolutions for the new Starter Pokémon Fuecoco and Quaxly. We sadly do not yet have the names for either of these Pokémon, but are speculated to be Fire / Fairy type and Water / Fighting type respectively. The legitimacy of some of these leaks is contested, as with all leaks many fake ones will float around the internet. The evolution for Fuecoco seems to draw inspiration from the Cocollona, a creature in Spanish folklore that is a crocodile with butterfly wings. This would be consistent with the Spanish theme of the game’s setting.
